Professional Knowledge

Adherence to the standard of professional knowledge ensures effective teaching practices. An effective teacher must possess the content knowledge of the subject areas to be taught, and the pedagogical knowledge of how to foster meaningful student learning. This knowledge includes a thorough understanding of the material to be taught, the ability to link the material to other knowledge and experiences, and to encourage higher thinking skills in students. An effective teacher will have thorough content knowledge, and will participate in continuous learning. This ensures a deeper understanding of material and relevant developments. An effective teacher will motivate students through relating information to real world experiences and interests. Similarly, lessons should stimulate prior knowledge to encourage retention, and to relate information to previous experiences. A teacher should differentiate material for student diversity, and present information in a manner that stimulates critical thinking.
